A Butterfly in Zurich This Sunday, January 19, 2025, at 5:30 PM, my piece Papillon d’hiver for three flutes and electronics will be performed by the students of Sabine Poyé Morel at the ZHdK Zürcher Hochschule der Künste , as part of a beautiful programme focused on contemporary flute and electronics. It’s always both a joy and a strange vulnerability to know that a piece will come to life through the hands of other musicians, in a place where I might only be a distant echo.

Enchanté de collaborer avec Forum Voix Etouffées Cemut pour présenter deux mouvements de mon cycle pour cordes frottées. Biography
Sina Fallahzadeh (1981) is an Iranian composer based in France, whose musical creations intertwine tradition and modernity.
Born in Tehran, he began his musical journey at an early age, studying both the Santur, a traditional Persian instrument, and the piano. His artistic path reflects a quest for identity shaped by the experience of exile and a constant exploration of new creative horizons. After earning a master’s degree in piano performance from the University of Art in Tehran, he moved to France to further his musical studies. He trained at prestigious institutions such as the CRR de Paris, the PSPBB, and the Haute École de Musique de Genève, honing his craft under the guidance of renowned composers including Gérard Pesson, Denis Dufour, Édith Canat de Chizy, and Michael Jarrell. He also pursued advanced studies in composition and computer music at IRCAM and obtained a master’s degree in musicology from the University of Paris-Sorbonne.
Sina’s music is characterized by a poetic and introspective approach. Drawing from his Persian heritage, he reinvents sonic textures and musical forms, where tradition and modernity converge. His works, often inspired by Persian literature and poetry, convey universal emotions while offering a contemplative reflection on the human condition.
A winner of the Luigi Russolo competition (2013), Sina Fallahzadeh collaborates with prestigious ensembles such as Ensemble Cairn, Ensemble 2e2m, Ensemble Itinéraire, Ensemble Lucilin, the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. His works have been performed in renowned venues such as IRCAM, the Centre Pompidou, and the Philharmonie de Luxembourg, as well as at major festivals including IRCAM’s ManiFeste, the Messiaen Festival at La Meije, and Festival Futura.
Through his music, Sina seeks to transcend cultural and aesthetic boundaries, creating works that are both deeply rooted in their time and a tribute to his rich heritage. Rejecting passive or static traditions, he positions himself as an active heir to Persian musical lineage, engaging in a continuous dialogue with it. His compositions explore the tensions between the complexity of the contemporary world and the timeless simplicity of spiritual traditions. By weaving a dialogue between the intimate and the universal, they question the human place in the cosmos, the fragility of existence, and the passage of time. His music, at the intersection of the sensory and the spiritual, invites the listener to profound contemplation on their own place in the world and their connection to the universe. This pursuit of the essential reflects his personal meditation on the role of art as a fleeting yet vital memory of our humanity.
